Take Responsibility for Your Own Old Age
Hello everyone!
Out of the blue, let me ask you a question: Are you just coasting through life day by day right now?
If so, I'd like you to pause for just a moment and think about something.
The truth is, a reality much harsher than we imagine awaits older Japanese people in retirement.
Even for those who have worked hard for many years, the pension they will receive in the future can hardly be called sufficient.
For instance, in my area, the maximum rent allowance is 38,000 yen. Other living expenses come out to around 70,000-some yen. Trying to get by on this every month is truly difficult, isn't it?
The era where "the government or your company will take care of you" is over. To live a life without regrets, let's start thinking about self-defense measures we can take right now!
1. Preparing for the Reality of a "Meager Pension"
Depending on the type of work, even those who have worked steadily for 40 years often "cannot survive on their pension alone in old age."
According to a certain survey, even if a married couple receives a monthly pension of 220,000 yen, that might only provide a lifestyle where they can barely afford to eat.
Look back at your life so far.
School entrance celebrations, weddings, funerals, gifts for children and grandchildren... When you recall these life events, each one requires a significant amount of money. Covering all of this with a pension alone is a harsh reality.
A Financial Defense Strategy for Medical Expenses You Should Know
If you ever fall ill and need to be hospitalized, there is a system to avoid causing as much financial burden as possible to your children. That is applying for an "Eligibility Certificate for Ceiling-Amount Application" (Gendogaku Tekiyo Ninteisho).
This applies to cases such as when all family members are exempt from municipal resident tax. Even if you live with your children, you can sometimes qualify by registering your resident certificate separately to form a "different household."
For example, even if your medical expenses for a one-month hospitalization reach 1,000,000 yen, if this system (copay reduction) applies, the actual amount you have to pay could be capped at just tens of thousands of yen.

The Younger You Are, the Sooner You Should Act!
If you're in your 20s or 30s and think, "Retirement is a story for the distant future"—now is your best opportunity to start.
Once you finish reading this blog, look into private pensions or asset building, or consult a specialist.
The TV and the people around you won't teach you individual strategies tailored to your needs. If you don't stay alert and take action yourself, nobody is going to save you.
2. How to Enjoy the Toy Box Called "Old Age Loneliness"
"I have a partner, children, grandchildren, and plenty of friends, so I'll be fine!"
Are you thinking this way?
However, friends tend to drift apart due to marriage or changes in their environments. Also, it is very rare for partners to pass away at the exact same time. As people grow older, they inevitably feel more or less lonely.
That is exactly why it is vital to have a "purpose in life that you can enjoy completely on your own" starting from now.
In my case, my hobby is painting. Besides that, I fully enjoy every single day through photography, blogging, writing novels, translating, walking, and video editing.
We live in a truly wonderful era now. Computers and smartphones are "magic boxes" packed with all our favorite toys.
Instead of just watching what others post, you can become the creator by writing your own blog or making your own pieces. Doing that can create new connections while keeping a comfortable distance through the internet.
3. That’s Why We Must Cherish Our "Human Relationships" Right Now
On the other hand, some people might say, "I'm going into a nursing home, so I'm fine." But entering a nursing home requires a substantial amount of money.
And even if you do enter a facility, the ones who will ultimately stay close to your life and your passing are your family.
If you are a senior citizen reading this blog, how are your relationships with those around you?
- Are you on good terms with your daughter-in-law (or son-in-law)?
- Are your grandchildren fond of you?
- Do your children treat you with care and respect?
If you can build relationships where everyone sees you as a "lovable grandpa or grandma," there is no greater peace of mind. Let’s make sure to build good relationships with our families starting today.
Only Your Present Self Can Save Your Future Self
In a way, old age is a gift from God called "solitude" (= your own free time). You want to make full use of this abundant time and enjoy it, right?
To do that, the best strategy is to start preparing now.
Whether you are young or old, it is a waste of time to just freeze up in anxiety about the future.
Let's not be lazy—let's give it everything we've got starting with what we can do today, all to help our future selves and our precious families!
