Living in today's competitive society, it feels like our rivals will quickly overtake us while we are feeling secure. Along with complacency, pride is also an enemy. If you start praising yourself, a powerful competitor will appear in no time.

When you are ranked slightly below the middle, you can't afford to relax; you see many rivals above you, which actually motivates you. That may be the sweet spot. If you are too far down, you might lose motivation and give up the race entirely. Conversely, if you are at the very top, you might get complacent and stop putting in the effort. If you are right in the middle, you might think, "Well, I guess this is good enough," and settle deeply into your comfort zone. This is just my perspective so opinions may vary. The ideal state is to be at the top without even caring about the competition.

I remember watching a TV show featuring a company president who achieved great success with a product called "Otokomae Tofu," reaching annual sales of 1 billion yen. When the TV crew visited his apartment, they encountered a shocking sight. The entrance was messy, and the room was cluttered. It was memorable to hear a staff member ask, "Are you really the president with a 1 billion yen annual turnover?" The president himself appeared in casual everyday clothes, looking just like an ordinary guy you would pass by in a local shopping street.

The president loves business, and he reportedly reinvests his profits into researching his next venture or into self-improvement. He gave the impression of someone charging straight down his chosen path. For him, it doesn't matter whether there are competitors or not. He isn't sitting back in comfort, nor is he filled with anxiety. He is someone purely immersed in what he loves. People like him might truly be invincible.

So, without underestimating yourself by thinking "this is good enough" or letting it go to your head that "I am the best," let’s take pride in the path we have chosen and immerse ourselves in what brings us joy.
