ガス室が設備されている収容所に送られるということは、死刑を宣告されたも同然です。労働に適さない弱い被収容者はそこで淘汰されていく。いつガス室が設備されている収容所に送られるか分からない状況の中で、耐えがたいほどの重労働を課せられると、人間は生き残るために他人のものを盗むのも平気になるという。命をつなぐための食事は、食べてもすぐに空腹に耐えられなくなるほど少なく、スープはほとんど水のように薄い。

労働をさぼると監視員から殴る蹴るのひどい暴行を受ける。監視員もまた上層部の上司から被収容者を厳しく管理するように言われている。命令に背く者は即解雇となる。ブラック企業と呼ばれている現代の企業とは比べものにならない。著者は、被収容者の日常を、どんな言葉を使っても、経験のない人には分かってもらえないと述べている。

監視員は被収容者を家畜のごとく扱い、罵声を浴びせ、重労働をさせるにはあまりにも少ない食事を与えた。このような状況の中で、被収容者は感情を失っていく。そして、被収容者にとって、生きていることだけがとてつもない贅沢となる。

そんな悲惨な日常の中でも、著者には精神が満たされる瞬間があった。それは愛する妻の面影を思い出し、空想の中で妻と語り合うことだった。そして、普通の人には当たり前としか思えないほどのほんの小さな風景でさえも、感動の対象となることを知った。

極限まで苦しんだ人間は、幸せ過ぎる人には見えない物が見えてくる。小さな恐怖から逃れることができるだけで神に感謝するようになる。混沌とした現代社会の中で私達ができることは、運命のなすがままに任せて目の前に展開している不運や、あるいはちょっとした幸運をありのままに受けいれることかもしれない。

生きている者はみんな死にたくない。命がかかっている戦場でパンを奪い合うことは悪いことでしょうか？　収容者が命令に背くと殺される状況の中で、収容者を管理している人が上司の命令に従って労働者に体罰を与えることはいけない事ですか？　もし自分が同じ立場にいたら、同じような卑劣なことをするかもしれない。そう思ったら、他人への憎しみが少しだけ薄らぎませんか？　人はみんな、与えられた遺伝子に従って生きているだけかもしれない。

Making the captive go to the camp equipped with the gas chamber is almost a death sentence. The helpless captives who are not suitable for work are weeded out there. While they don't know when they will be moved to the camp with the gas chamber and forced to work so hard that the captives can't bear it, it is said that they have no issues with stealing other people's things. The observers punch and kick the captive when they get lazy about working. The observers also follow their bosses to strictly instruct the workers. Anyone who disobeys an order is instantly fired. Their brutal methods of instruction are incomparable to those of today's rogue companies. The author said that it is impossible to make people without experience of the captive's everyday life understand, no matter what language he uses.

Every living creature doesn't want to die. Do you think stealing bread on the battlefield, where our lives are at stake, is terrible? The captives are killed when they disobey orders. Is it wrong for the observers to give physical punishment to the captives following the boss's order? If we were in the same situation, we might do despicable things. Why couldn't we relieve our hatred for people we hate when we think like this? All humans might be just living by their genes.
