Hello everyone!
Today, I’ve remade the classic Japanese folktale, "The Tortoise and the Hare." In any competition, we all want to play fair and square. But some people will do anything to win, even if it means playing dirty. And when they do win, they might feel a pang of guilt—or maybe some feel absolutely nothing at all.
Human nature is a strange thing. Even those who claim, "I would never do anything so underhanded," often end up causing trouble for others in some way. One example of this is turning a blind eye. Seeing someone being bullied at school or work and doing nothing about it is a form of bystander complicity. Yet, many people stay quiet simply because they are terrified of the backlash. It is a frustrating human trait to just go with the flow, thinking, "It’s no big deal, everyone else is doing it."
If a higher power truly exists, we are likely committing small transgressions in various aspects of our lives. Yet, the universe keeps us alive and forgives us. Therefore, we too should forgive others and free our minds. We must never let a desire for revenge take root. Those who cannot abide by the rules of human society will eventually either be weeded out by natural providence or corrected by the laws of nature.
A Remade Tale: Usakichi and Kametaro
Once upon a time, in a certain place, a hare named Usakichi lived. One morning, Kametaro the tortoise ran into Usakichi and greeted him cheerfully, "Good morning!" Usakichi, looking for a bit of mischief, decided to tease Kametaro. "What’s so good about it? You're not fast at all, are you?"
Kametaro shot back without hesitating, "What are you talking about? Even if you're fast, if you slack off like the hare in the story, you'll finish last. Surely you know the tale of the Tortoise and the Hare!"
Usakichi's Hidden Plot and the First Heavy Step
As they argued, they decided to settle it with a race to the very top of the mountain. Usakichi, though overly confident and a bit cheeky, had a streak of kindness and offered Kametaro a handicap.
Usakichi promised to walk only, while Kametaro was free to run, use roller skates, or use any other tools he liked. "I'll win even without using a thing!" Kametaro declared. Usakichi let out a meaningful, sly grin. He secretly plotted, knowing there was absolutely no way roller skates would ever fit a tortoise's feet.
The race began. Ready, set, go! Usakichi started moving forward at a slow, leisurely pace. Kametaro plodded along heavily, and in the blink of an eye, the distance between them widened significantly. Just as Usakichi vanished from sight, a voice called out from right behind Kametaro. "Yo, sorry to keep you waiting!"
The voice belonged to Taka-chan the hawk. "Hey, hop on my back! We'll reach the summit in a single bound." With that, Taka-chan took Kametaro onto his back. As they zipped through the air, cutting through the wind, they looked down and spotted Usakichi walking far below. True to his word, he was actually walking. Kamekich (Kametaro) felt a bit...
